  • 2004 The state’s constitution was amended to say “To secure and preserve the benefits of marriage for our society and for future generations of children, the union of one man and one woman in marriage shall be the only agreement recognized as a marriage or similar union for any purpose.” See Mich. Constitution, Article I § 25.
  • 1996 Michigan law prohibits same-sex couples from marrying by statute, and prohibits recognition of lawfully married same-sex couples from other states or jurisdictions. See Mich. Compiled Laws § 551.1, § 551.271-2 and § 551.272.
