  • 1997 Anti-marriage bill adopted. Senate Bill 11 introduced prohibiting same-sex couples from marrying, refusing to recognize lawful marriages from other states, and denying same-sex couples “the benefits of marriage.” Referred to Judiciary Committee. House Bill 41 referred to Judiciary Committee. Adopted by Committee as amendment to unrelated health servicest bill as way of getting around the appropriate subcommittee. Passed through both houses, and signed into law by Gov. Arne Carlson (R) on June 2. See Minnesota Statutes § 363A.27.
