Lambda Legal submitted a friend-of-the-court brief to the Maryland high court in the marriage equality case brought by the ACLU, which is being argued on Monday, December 4, 2006. Lambda Legal’s brief argues that the guarantee of equal protection in Maryland’s Constitution requires that, when the government treats groups differently, there at least must be a legitimate government purpose for treating one group worse than the other, and that it is not enough that there may be a reason to provide benefits to those given them.
