“People will die, all just so the rich can get richer.”
The U.S. Senate early Tuesday morning passed a version of President Trump’s budget bill that, in addition to adding trillions to the national debt, kicks millions off Medicaid, and denies millions more access to health care, including LGBTQ+ people, people living with HIV and people living on limited incomes.
Lambda Legal Staff Policy Attorney Alexandra Curd issued the following statement:
“Early this morning, after a marathon session and under cover of darkness, the U.S. Senate – much like the House of Representatives six weeks ago – by a razor-thin margin requiring Vice-President Vance to cast a tie-breaking vote, approved a malicious and horrific budget bill that explicitly targets the transgender community and in many other respects poses tremendous risk to the LGBTQ+ community, everyone living with HIV and those living on limited incomes.
“Many non-partisan entities have underscored that this bill will cause a massive increase in the national debt and immense harm to Medicare and the Affordable Care Act through draconian cuts.
“This budget’s ‘bottom line’ will be increased deaths in LGBTQ+ and HIV+ communities, as well as for people living on limited incomes from all backgrounds. Make no mistake: People will die, all just so the rich can get richer.”
