Today, the U.S. Department of Justice announced a settlement with New York University Langone Hospitals (NYU) that allegedly resolves the federal government’s purported investigation into NYU’s provision of gender-affirming care to minors. Lambda Legal, the New York Civil Liberties Union, the American Civil Liberties Union, and counsel for the class in Coe v. Blanche issued the following statement:
“Because of our lawsuit and the resulting injunction, no patient information of any kind has been disclosed to the Department of Justice as part of NYU’s or Mount Sinai’s recently-announced settlements—nor could it be, as that order remains in full effect. It’s beyond shameful that the Trump administration has strong-armed NYU and Mount Sinai into striking a deal that betrays transgender young people in New York. While we don’t know the full terms of the agreement, we do know it is another capitulation that puts political retribution over hospitals’ ethical and legal obligations to, and the well-being of, trans youth. Transgender young people deserve access to gender-affirming care, which helps them live as their authentic selves and can be lifesaving. We will continue fighting side by side with transgender young people and their families to protect their rights.”
