Lambda Legal today welcomed Nydia Sahagun as its Chief Marketing & Communications Officer (CMCO). She succeeds Cindi Creager, Lambda Legal’s former Chief Communications Officer.
Sahagun has spent 25 years making sure the communities that brands most often overlook are seen, understood, and valued. At Target, she launched the company’s first LGBTQ+ guest strategy and its Take Pride campaign, then worked across the business to change how diversity was represented in Target’s core advertising. At Wells Fargo, she led diverse segment strategy for the enterprise brand and the Empowerful campaign. Through that work and her support of each company’s foundation and philanthropy, she partnered with Family Equality Council, the Human Rights Campaign, GLAAD, GLSEN, and Reaching Out MBA.
She went on to lead marketing for Humana’s CenterWell Primary Care and most recently served as Chief Marketing Officer of UniVista Insurance, an insurance distributor primarily serving Hispanic communities in Florida and Texas.
Creager, a beloved member of the Lambda Legal team, guided the organization’s communications as it took the second Trump administration to court nine times. Those cases challenge the ban on transgender military service, the denial of accurate passports to transgender and nonbinary people, cuts to health care for transgender youth, and attacks on HIV and LGBTQ+ health care and research. They also won the return of the Pride flag to the Stonewall National Monument. Creager came to Lambda Legal with nearly two decades of LGBTQ+ movement experience, including as GLAAD’s Director of National News.
“Cindi brought a journalist’s instincts and two decades of movement experience to Lambda Legal at one of the most challenging moments our community has faced, and our team loved working with her. We are deeply grateful for everything she gave us. Nydia builds on that foundation with a career spent proving that when you truly see a community, you can move people to act. We are thrilled to welcome her,” said Kevin Jennings, CEO of Lambda Legal.
“Working alongside such a smart, talented, and generous group of people, and watching Lambda Legal strengthen its voice in the public discourse, has been one of the great honors of my career. I’m especially grateful to my Communications colleagues. I love this team. I’ll be cheering Nydia Sahagun and Lambda Legal in this important new chapter,” said Creager.
“For 25 years I’ve worked to make sure LGBTQ+ people and other communities are seen and valued. Now I get to do that work for an organization that fights for our rights every day. I’m honored to join Lambda Legal and help more people understand what’s at stake and how they can be part of the fight,” said Sahagun.
Sahagun holds a Master of Business Administration from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management and a Bachelor of Arts in Marketing Communications from Columbia College Chicago. She is a founding contributor to the Association of National Advertisers’ Alliance for Inclusive and Multicultural Marketing and has been featured in Ad Age, Portada, and Minnesota Public Radio. She is bilingual in English and Spanish.
