Lambda Legal is honoring leading LGBTQ+ rights group, Georgia Equality, at its annual Lambda Legal in Atlanta Brunch taking place on August 18th at the InterContinental Buckhead.
“At a time when state legislatures are passing hundreds of bills targeting LGBTQ+ people, especially trans and nonbinary youth, Georgia Equality is a beacon of hope and strength,” said Michael D. Shutt, Regional Director of Lambda Legal’s Southern Regional Office. “We are thrilled to honor Georgia Equality for its collaborative and bipartisan efforts that continue to ensure LGBTQ+ equality throughout the State of Georgia.”
Founded in 1995, Georgia Equality’s mission is to advance fairness, safety and opportunity for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer communities and our allies throughout the state. As Georgia’s largest LGBTQ+ organization with an active membership of over 45,000 and a staff and board located throughout the state, their work has had an impact in local communities as well as at the State Capitol. In addition to policy work, their educational programs working with youth, faith communities and people living with HIV/AIDS, as well as their focus on racial, gender and geographic equity, are a model that honors the complexity and diversity of LGBTQ+ identities, families, and communities.
“As an organization that focuses its fight in the courtroom, it is fitting and important for Lambda Legal to celebrate Georgia Equality’s focus on the legislative branch, passing pro-equality legislation to advance rights while blocking discriminatory legislation to preserve rights,” said Kevin Fogle and Robert Poole, Lambda Legal in Atlanta event Co-Chairs. “In a year where hundreds of anti-LGBTQ+ bills have been introduced across the country, Georgia Equality stopped every single anti-LGBTQ bill introduced during Georgia’s 2024 legislative session. This heroic effort is all the more deserving considering the target of these bills: LGBTQ+ youth. Because of Georgia Equality’s work, children across Georgia can sleep better, secure in their right to exist at school and while playing sports.”
The Lambda Legal in Atlanta Brunch is an annual fundraising event to support the critical work of Lambda Legal in Georgia, the South, and across the country.
