Journalist, Human Rights Activist to be Honored in her Native Chicago at Annual Event as LGBTQ+ Legal Organization Marks 50th Anniversary
Lambda Legal is honoring nationally-recognized journalist and human rights activist Tracy Baim at its annual Bon Foster Civil Rights Celebration taking place May 19 at the Art Institute of Chicago – Modern Wing.
“We chose to recognize Tracy due to her four decades of advocating for those in the LBGT+ community in Chicago” said Camilla Taylor, the Chicago-based Deputy Legal Director for Litigation at Lambda Legal. “Through her dedicated work, she told the stories of LGBTQ+ people that would never have been told without her. She recorded for history the injustice faced by LGBTQ+ Chicagoans, their many struggles for equality, and the resilience, joy, and strength of this community. From highlighting our issues, telling our stories, and leveraging our collective power, Tracy has moved our communities closer to justice and equality. She is a perfect honoree to align with Lambda Legal’s 50th anniversary.”
Tracy co-founded of The Windy City Times, a publication that has served to cover every local and national news issue impacting the LGBTQ+ community and – from the earliest days of the epidemic – everyone living with HIV. Her journalism has documented and propelled the LGBTQ+ civil rights movement forward.
The Bon Foster Civil Rights Celebration is Lambda Legal’s annual fundraising event in Chicago and is named in honor of Robert Bonvoulior “Bon” Foster, the late civil rights activist and attorney. A generous bequest from Bon’s estate founded Lambda Legal’s Midwest regional office in 1993.
“The Bon Foster event is very special to us. The legacy of Lambda Legal’s Midwest office, and the victories secured here, are a result of Bon’s vision and generosity. We gather annually in his name, for an event that celebrates our community – the vision of all who came before, those who fight today and everyone who wants a better tomorrow. An Unprecedented Past and an Unstoppable Future,” added Taylor. “Bringing together more than 500 supporters from across the Chicagoland area, it raises more than half a million dollars from individuals, law firms and corporate donors. This year’s event is underwritten by an anonymous donor, which is a testament to the passion of the community for this celebration. As a result, every gift will directly support Lambda Legal’s ongoing work.”
This year Lambda Legal celebrates its 50th anniversary. For five decades, Lambda Legal has defended and advanced the civil rights of LGBTQ+ people and everyone living with HIV.
