• June 28, 2023 – Unites States District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee grants preliminary injunction preventing enforcement of Senate Bill 1.
• July 11, 2023 – United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit allows Senate Bill 1 to take effect while the State of Tennessee’s appeal of the preliminary injunction is heard.
• September 1, 2023 – U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit hears oral argument in Tennessee’s appeal of the preliminary injunction
• September 28, 2023 – U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit rejects effort to block enforcement of Senate Bill 1.
• November 1, 2023 – Lambda Legal, the ACLU, the ACLU of Tennessee and Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Field LLP file a petition for certiorari asking the United States Supreme Court to review the ruling by the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.
• November 6, 2023 – U.S. Department of Justice files a separate petition for certiorari with the Supreme Court
• June 24, 2024 – The U.S. Supreme Court grants the U.S. Department of Justice petition for certiorari. Oral argument expected winter 2024.
